Flying to Gibraltar airport and information
Information about Gibraltar airport and the flights to and from Gibraltar Gibraltar airport is situated at the foot of southern Spain and the Costa del Sol just before you enter the Costa de la Luz. The airport at Gibraltar is located on the British held territory over the border from the Spanish town of La Linea. Depending where on the Costa del Sol or the Costa de la Luz you are staying, Gibraltar airport might actually be a better option than Malaga Airport. In the past Gibraltar airport used to be expensive to fly in and out of as there was only one airline operator that flew to Gibraltar. Nowadays there is more choice, and although there are still relatively few flights in and our of Gibraltar airport each day, the competition has brought the cost of flights right down. Historic Agreement for Gibraltar Airport The territory of Gibraltar has been the cause of many "arguments" over the decades between Spain and the UK. However, despite this a recent agreement was reached for the first flights from Gibraltar to within Spain to commence. At the moment it is possible to fly from Gibraltar to Madrid with Iberia. The agreement also means there are plans to extend the airport so that passengers on "internal" flights within Spain will not have to pass through customs at Gibraltar (something which in the height of summer can take over an hour). Latest News on Gibraltar Airport It has been announced (October 2007) that from March 2008 British Airways have sold their "franchise" GB Airways to EasyJet. This means that from March 2008 EasyJet will fly to and from Gibraltar and British Airways will no longer have any flights. Advantages of Gibraltar Airport The great thing about Gibraltar airport is the fact that is nice and easy to get around. It is a small airport with only one terminal and one runway so there is no need for coach transfers to and from the plane or no long walks to the airport terminal itself. One downside to Gibraltar airport, if you are staying in Spain is the fact that in order to hop on a bus or a taxi to take you to another destination in Spain, you will need to cross the border (or frontier) on foot and then pick up your service on the Spanish side. This is the same for returning to Gibraltar airport. The Spanish taxi can only take you as far as the border and you will have to go through on foot. However, the distance from the Spanish border to airport is only a matter of a few yards so it should not create to much disruption to your journey. The other option of course is to arrange a car rental at Gibraltar airport in which case you can load up and drive across the border. Just bear in mind that in the summer months it could take you an hour or so to drive through the border from Gibraltar airport, as you have to exit the UK customs and go through the Spanish customs. The Spanish customs here are renowned for checking every few cars and this slows your exit from to Gibraltar to Spain considerably. The same applies when arriving back to Gibraltar airport so make sure you leave at least an hour to an hour and a half extra just to cross the border. |
