With many top and well known developers in Spain filing for bankruptcy protection and lots more unable to complete or even start work on planned developments, buying investment property in Spain can be a minefield, especially if you don't get sound advice.

There is still money to be made on property in Spain, even in the shorter term but most Spanish property investments are now geared towards the mid to long term.

These days with so many properties being offered for sale at much lower prices than previous years it is possible to get a good deal on new and even resale properties in Spain.

Be very careful with websites and adverts offering repossessed property as it is not the same process here in Spain and a repossession does not necessarily mean a good deal. When a bank takes back a property in Spain it tends to be those that were 'over mortgaged' and at a time when prices were much higher. Therefore the amount of money a bank would need to cover the outstanding debt is often much higher than the market price and banks are not in the habit of letting them go at a loss.

This is not to say that there are some genuine bargains to be had and if you can purchase just before the properties are given back to the bank you can often get a great deal.
