Before hitting the big time with hollywood blockbusters like Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Vanilla Sky and the controversial film Blow, Penelope Cruz trained for thirteen yeas as a ballet dancer and a further four years at Cristina Rota's Theatre School in her home city of Madrid. She was not shy of hard work and appeared in many roles, even in a video for a pop group called La Fuerza which went on to become a massive hit. Like many up and coming Spanish actors' she made a name for herself in the Spanish film indsustry in films like Belle Epoque and All About my Mother and really started to get noticed when she was voted the most beautiful Spanish Actress in 1998.

Her high profile romance with her Vanilla Sky co star Tom Cruise was covered virtually everyweek in the media and they once had the tag of the perfect hollywood couple. Sadly they split and although said to remain good friends they are both concentrating on their careers.

Some of her films include Gothika, Head in the Clouds, Sahara, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Vanilla Sky, Blow, Hi-Lo Country, Live Flesh and Talk of Angels and more recently superb films like Volver for which Academy voters chose Penelope Cruz' performance in "Volver" as one of the best of 2006.
