Directions:
How to get the the Costa de la Luz from Malaga Airport - The journey is actually very simple without the need to change roads or routes. The main choice you will have is whether to travel on the AP7 toll road or the A7/N340 coast road. As you exit malaga airport you head for the A7/N340 towards Cadiz/Algeciras. You basically stay on this road until you come to your first decision, the toll road or the coast road? This section is just by the Fuengirola / Mijas exit. The toll road continues straight ahead whereas the N340 / A7 splits of to the right. The toll road is easy to distinguish as it is a white circle with a red band containing the words "peaje". If you take the coast road you hit the Fuengirola by-pass and just keep going along the dual carriageway passing exits to many resorts such as La Cala de Mijas, Calahonda, Elvira (home to Nikki Beach Marbella), El Rosario, Marbella Poligino (the Marbella industrial estate). Just after this exit you will see a large shopping centre called La Canada on your right at this point the toll road rejoins the N340 / A7. Keep going past the many exits to different sections of Marbella centre until again you have the choice of the toll road or the N340. At this point I would recommend the toll road, especially in the summer. If you remain on the N340 you will pass Puerto Banus on your left. This is where the traffic can start to back up as there is a major bottleneck in San Pedro de Alcantara. If you have chosen this route, expect this small section to take anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour. Once through San Pedro de Alcantara you just keep heading for Algeciras / Cadiz. If you took the toll road before San Pedro you will rejoin the N340 just past Estepona, which is where you will end up if you took the slower N340. Again after this point the road will split into the coast road and the toll road. The toll road continues straight on and the coast road will bear off right and rise up a hill to a roundabout. Follow signs for Cadiz / Algeciras and keep going straight. After Sotogrande the toll road rejoins the coast road and now you just head for Algeciras, past the exits for San Roque La Linea and Gibraltar. Eventually you will bypass Algeciras and once through here you will rise up a steep hill where you will see many wind farms and spectacular views of Gibraltar and Africa. As you head down you will see an exit for Tarifa on your left and the sea off in the distance ahead of you. Welcome to the Costa de la Luz.
